Thailand 2008

We have recently returned from our 2008 Thailand trip which was a great success. A total of 30 Wicker Camp students enjoyed a 3 centre holiday visiting Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Pattaya.

We had the 1st 3 days in Bangkok and stayed at a really nice hotel called Villa Cha Cha, comfortable and relaxed with nice rooms and a beautifully landscaped restaurant/pool area. We trained with our old friends at Vorapin gym in Banglamphu, great atmosphere and really friendly padmen. Sight seeing included the spectacular and beautiful Grand Palace, exploring the Chao Phraya river and it’s residential waterways on long tailed boats (The Venice of the Orient) and lots of shopping in the many centres and night bizarres.

Then onto Kanchanaburi for 3 days, staying on the River Kwai in raft houses, a complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of busy Bangkok. The pace of life here is slow and relaxed but there’s lots to do, we went elephant trekking, river rafting and explored amazing cave Temples.

Our beach stay was the infamous resort of Pattaya!! We stayed at the Fairtex Hotel and Sport Complex. This was a great complex with loads of sports on site (included in our room rate) as well as the Muaythai Camp. The training here was good  but our main purpose of going to Pattaya was to train at the famous Sityodthong Camp who Mick has a long history with. It was a great experience and it was nice to see some old friends including Master Yodthong. Shopping, outrageous nightlife and beautiful islands kept us all busy for a week.

On Sunday 22nd June Thomas McCormick, a student at Wicker Camp for 14 years, fought at Rajadamneon Stadium in Bangkok. We all travelled from Pattaya and went to support him and it was an electric night and we even got some of the the Thai audience shouting for him. Thomas won on points and fought very well (see latest results for fight review).

Our final 3 days were back in Bangkok to finish off shopping and prepare mentally for our journey home. We also visited and trained with our old friend Jitty and Sara (an ex Wicker Camp student) at their gym where Thomas and his dad Pete (Senior Instructor) stayed for the week before his fight.

Next year’s trip will be in June (dates to be confirmed) and will visit Bangkok and Phuket with optional daytrips to Lopburi, Ayuthaya and Koh Si Chang. Look out for posters on reception.

We would like to thank Jitty and Sara for all the hard work they did to make Thomas’s fight possible and wish them our love and best wishes for their forthcoming wedding (long overdue!) and sorry we couldn’t have been there for them.
