It’s always been an in-house event with two teams (red vs blue) sparring for the Wicker Camp Team Sparring Championship Cup (it’s a proper really big silver one). The two teams are coached by a team captain and bouts are judged by Mick, the contact is light technical sparring. Competitors are matched fairly and given their own special ‘ fight ‘ name.

This Team Sparring event on Sunday 5th February is for Trix’s charity ‘ The British Heart Foundation ‘. The entry fee is £5 and any graded student can enter, we want seniors and juniors and we encourage all students taking part to try and raise some sponsorship for the BHF, sponsorship forms are available from reception.

Have a chat with Mick or Trix and put your name down on the list on reception, teams and matches will be published the week before the event.

What to expect.

The seminar will begin at 10am sharp, please don’t be late ( gym will be open from 9am to come in and get changed ). After a brief intro we’ll be straight into the course. Following a quick warm-up and stretch, the first part of the seminar will concentrate on clinchwork, exploring different types of clinches and their uses. You will learn some of the stomach-churning knee attacks and clever Thai neck-wrestling tricks, how to defend properly and effectively, which attacks to expect and when and how to read your opponent’s intention. We will examine the specific targets a Thai-Boxer will exploit to inflict damage to an opponent and how to develop tremendous power in the knee strike through extensive padwork and some heavy bagwork.

After a short break, the second part of this seminar will re-commence with a warning about the serious risks of potential injury. We’ll use partner work almost exclusively to practice a variety of methods used to knee an opponent to the head and face. Along with padwork, we’ll look at attacks and counter-attacks all culminating in repeated and successful knees to the head. You will learn how to deliver a devastating knee using timing and when to deliver the knee for maximum damage.

Next one at Wicker Camp May/June

Thank you to all our students for taking part and coming to support the Xmas Team Sparring, you helped raise £757 which will go towards insulating the gym.

The night was a great success and we were very pleased with the turn out. We had 20 bouts and everyone was fantastic and enjoyed competing. A big thank you to ‘Bear’ James Burke who captained the Red Team and to Majid Hussain who was the winning team captain, the Blue Corner. Also thank you to Jordan and Jaz Meates for their excellent refereeing skills and to Ben Moran-Healy for help with the raffle and sorting out the competitors along with Helene Garnett and Daniel Hudson. Thanks to Mr Pete McCormick who was the time keeper and thanks to Phung for her delicious Thai food.

We want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Mr Glen Leather who has raised £1200 for the gym for the new central heating system which can now be installed in the New Year. Events like this make the gym stronger and it is only with your continued support that these happen. Thank you to everyone and we wish you a Merry Xmas and a very Happy New Year.
