IFMA European Championships Paris
Results from day 2 of the tournament.
🥊 JACK LAYTON | U18 -71kg
At just 16 years of age, Jack made his European Championship debut against a strong Polish opponent. Starting positively, Jack struggled to find his rhythm as his opponent established control and applied relentless pressure. A tough introduction to championship-level competition, but an invaluable experience for one of our youngest athletes.
🥊 MATTHEW ROTHERY
Matthew demonstrated tremendous resilience and fighting spirit against a powerful Greek opponent. Having suffered two early counts in the opening round, he showed his experience and determination to regroup and turn the contest into a competitive battle. Despite fighting courageously until the final bell, victory went to Greece.
🥊 ROMAN CARNALL | U24 -60kg
Making his debut at this level, Roman faced a technically accomplished Russian opponent in a closely contested encounter. Both athletes enjoyed periods of success, producing a competitive and entertaining bout. Ultimately, his opponent's experience proved decisive, but Roman can take plenty of encouragement from his performance.
🥊 BRANDON MORRISON | U24 -67kg
At just 18 years old, Brandon stepped into the U24 division for his European Championship debut against a physically imposing and experienced Russian opponent. It was always going to be a considerable challenge, and despite Brandon's best efforts, his opponent's strength and dominance in the clinch resulted in a second-round stoppage.
A difficult experience, but one that will undoubtedly contribute to Brandon's development as he continues to mature and progress.
🥊 ROO MARCH-MULLANEY | U24 -71kg
Our GB Team Captain closed the day's action against the reigning IFMA U24 World Champion from Moldova.
In a highly competitive and skilful encounter, both athletes displayed excellent technical ability and composure. Roo produced a strong performance against world-class opposition, but it was his Moldovan opponent who secured the judges' decision.
For now, we remain proud of the commitment, courage and determination shown by our British Lions.
We win together, we learn together, and we come back stronger together.
Thank you to Tommy Collins for an amazing job cornering and to Yaseen Mohammed for all the logistics.
